ope Benedict XVI surprised nearly everyone with his first encyclical, a timely and challenging meditation on what Christian love really is. The letter looks at how our society so often presents a very incomplete understanding of love, focusing on the emotional and the physical alone. Instead, the pope shows that love is this, but so much more, and he provides concrete encouragement for Catholics to love each other and care for the most needy among us as Christ himself did. This is the message that Catholcs need to hear during these times of fear, division, and exclusion. The pope gets to the heart of the matter, the loving heart of God himself. OSV-P283
