“No one of the Reformers, probably, sowed the seeds of sound Protestant doctrine so widely and effectually among the middle classes as Latimer.”
“He is glorious proof that Jesus can sustain His people even in the fire, and will be a present help to those who trust Him in their time of need.”
This short biography will introduce you to the life, ministry and times of Hugh Latimer. Ryle helps the reader to know not only his doctrine, but also his godly character.
This short biography of the martyred bishop and reformer, Hugh Latimer (14871555), was one of Ryles first historical works. In this work he examines the ministry of Bishop Latimer under three headings: 1) Latimers times; 2) Latimers life; 3) Latimers opinions. These are the aspects of Latimers history that Ryle found most instructive. When Ryle first delivered this lecture, a group of churchmen were actively seeking to un-Protestantize the Church of England and bring it closer to the Church of Rome in both worship and doctrine.
